Kevin White, James Brown

Blessed with friends who like to do stuff and know
where it's going down, on Monday I got to catch a sneak
preview of "The Night James Brown Saved
Boston" at one of the gorgeous screening rooms
at WGBH. It's a documentary
about the concert James Brown performed in Boston the
night after MLK was killed. The gist: the city decided to
broadcast it live, and only the public TV station
could do it, and as a result, Boston was the only big
city that didn't have major riots that night because
everyone stayed in to watch James Brown. I'll
talk about it later.

Right now I'll just say that the
film focuses on a sliver of time, deliberately and
rightfully avoiding the
troubles of his later years.

And watching him charm and calm a broken city will
wring your heart.

It's going to be on VH1 this weekend. Here.

Separately, I want to apologize to my old roommate
Byron for insisting that he hide the sculpture made out
of little bronze baby heads seven years ago. Apparently
Byron was ahead of his time. Apparently it was art.
